In the article "The Apocalypse is Yours Now", Barbara is trying to tell the class of graduates of '07 that if they want to make something of themselves and are going out to the real world to find it, then they better be prepared because they are going to go through pretty much "hell". With a debt of over $20,000 and no health insurance most graduates will end up either caged in cubicles, behind the counter of Starbuck's or Borders, or trying to still pay off that debt. The way the world is today, isn't going to help most graduates of the future. She also says that they have to make a new way of life because they way things are now aren't really going to help at all. So, they should try to change the world and make things easier not only for the ones graduating now but for the next generation. I think she is being optimistic but in a pessimistic way. I mean, yeah she's telling the graduates to go out into the real world and try to make the best of it with the resources available but that it wont be too easy because of the way this crappy world is now. So, her speech was pretty pessimistic but she is kind of trying to be a little optimistic??..
